Bone Health Reviews

Back in June 2019 I took on a new client GP surgery in Bolton to conduct Bone Health Reviews. This was our first client in the North West and they were new to the service.

I undertook the review and went through the review with the Prescribing Lead of the surgery.

We identified patients that were in high fracture risk groups (based on national clinical guidelines) and developed a prescribing plan on how to treat these patients so to reduce fracture risks and reduce hospital admissions.

We then identified a large prescribing saving potential for Calcium and Vitamin D prescribing in the surgery where the GP authorised the switch to more cost effective, compliant Calcium and Vitamin D medication.

The review was then completed as per usual.

The prescribing saving I did at the surgery was taken notice by the CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) of the area. They reviewed the action plan I executed with the surgery and were impressed at the effectiveness of patient treatment and cost saving potential.

The CCG then helped implement the review across all practices in their area (roughly 50 practices) and as a result made a huge cost saving in excess of £250,000 a year directly to the NHS area prescribing budget just based on efficient prescribing of Calcium and Vitamin D based medication.
